Glenfarclas

The distillery first started operations from the late 1790s but was granted license in 1836. When the founder John Hay died in 1865, his neighbour John Grant (J&B Grant) bought the distillery for £512. It has remained in his family’s hands ever since. As George Grant, sixth generation of the family says: “We have lived through 22 recessions. We make what we can afford to make, and never borrow money to make it.”

Glenfarclas is also one of the few plants to have retained stills which are heated with direct fire, believing that it adds weight to the distillate. In 1968, Glenfarclas becomes the first to release a cask strength single malt, which later is renamed Glenfarclas 105.

In 1973, the visitors’centre is built, becoming one of the first distilleries to open its door to visitors

The export-led strategy in recent years has seen the brand expand globally with an average sales of 700,000 bottles annually
