Deanston distillery started life in 1785 as a cotton mill and remained as such for 180 years until it was transformed into a distillery in 1966. It is claimed to be one of the greenest distilleries in Scotland where all of its power is generated by a turbine house which processes 20 million litres of water an hour. The excess electricity is then sold to the National Grid. It is the largest distillery owned by the current owner Distell Group Limited, who also own Bunnahabhain distillery on the Isle of Islay and Tobermory distillery on the Isle of Mull.
