Glendronach

Glendronach is the 2nd distillery to apply for a license to legally produce whisky under the Excise Act of 1823. It was one of the largest duty paying distillery in the Scottish Highlands. Over 50 people lived on site at this time, including all of the workers and their families.

In 1920, Captain Charles Grant bought over the distillery. Charles was the son of the founder of the Glenfiddich Distillery, William Grant. The distillery became the last in Scotland to switch over from coal fire to steam in 2005.

The distillery was named Global Whisky Distiller of the Year at the 2015 Icons of Whisky Awards which was a great achievement for a small privately-owned independent company to win this prestigious global award.

With the takeover of the distillery in 2016 by Brown Forman Corporation, celebrated whisky maker Dr. Rachel Barrie was appointed Master Blender of The GlenDronach, Benriach and Glenglassaugh distilleries (all owned by Brown Forman).

Rachel Barrie became the first female master blender to be given an honorary doctorate by the University of Edinburgh for her “expertise and service to the whisky industry”.
