In 1797, a local kelp merchant by the name of John Sinclair applied for a lease of 57 acres of land, hoping to build a distillery and housing. His application was rejected, with permission granted only for a brewery. But as is with most whisky stories, John’s persistence was quickly rewarded the following year – establishing Ledaig, the only distillery in all of the Isle of Mull to this day.
Later renamed Tobermory, the distillery served the island for more than a century before being shut-down in the 1930s, courtesy of the Great Depression and US prohibition. In 1993, Tobermory took on a new life with recent owners Burn Stewart Distillers – before being renovated and rebuilt by Distell, 2 decades later. In 2019 marked the distillery officially opening its doors and firing up the stills, offering two single malt variants – namely the unpeated Tobermory and peated Ledaig.
Fresh, medium-dry whiskies flaunting a smooth and fruity taste – Tobermory perfectly captures its native colorfully – idyllic island community.
The liquor produced in the distillery is used in the blends Scottish Leader and Black Bottle.
