Glenscotia is one of just three distilleries left in Campbeltown, the smallest whisky region. Springbank and Glengyle are the other distilleries operating in this region.
In 1832, a humble distillery by the name of Scotia, rode in on the wave of Campbeltown’s inflated demand as the onset of steam navigation made shipping much easier. However, by 1930, most local distilleries including Scotia would mark the last of its production for quite a while.
In another three years, Scotia would be bought by the Bloch Brothers and reopened as Glen Scotia. Glen Scotia would then be sold, bought, mothballed, and then sold again a couple of times before finding the masterful guidance of the Loch Lomond Group. Even through its turbulent history, Glen Scotia has held onto what makes it unique – carefully preserving its original mashtun, stillroom, and dunnage warehouse as well as their traditional ‘small batch process’. It is a prudent reminder to value the best of the bygone even when turning over a new leaf.
Each year, for the annual Campbeltown Malt Whisky Festival, Glen Scotia release a special limited release bottling. The 25 year old expression released by the distillery was voted as the best whisky in the world 2021 at San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
