The distiillery was built in 1826 by Peter MacKenzie but the distillery’s most famous owner was Alexander Edward who was a partner in Craigellachie distillery, owned Aultmore, Dallas Dhu and was for a time co-owner of Oban. The major demand for the whisky produced in the distillery was by blenders, this being the reason Benrinnes has never become a front-line single malt.
In 1991, Benrinnes released its first single malt whisky – 15-year old Floara and Fauna. The distillery employed a unique partial triple distillation process until 2007 in favour of the traditional double distillation process.
