Benromach

The Forres-based Benromach Distillery was one of the many new builds popping up in 19th century Speyside, laying its foundation in the year 1898. The distillery wouldn’t be operational until 1900, only to be shut down the very same year. Along the next few decades, Benromach’s production would remain sporadic, courtesy of a series of uncertain ownerships.

Along with the inception of Benromach, the early 20th century would also see the rise of a whisky-passionate family, the Urquharts of Elgin. In 1915, when the norm was to blend the whiskies, John Urquhart would be laying the foundation of casks of single malt across different distilleries with just an ambition of owning a distillery.

The two legacies would interweave in the year 1993, as the Urquhart family-owned Gordon & MacPhail would acquire the Benromach Distillery. A simple vision in mind, traditional, handcrafted Speyside single malt. Following 5 years of rigorous refitting and extensive trials, the distillery would officially be reopened by Charles, Prince of Wales. The bottling of its new malt wouldn’t be until 2004.

Fast forward to the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2021, a joyous ceremony of celebration for the Benromach Distillery, as all three of its 10, 15, and 21 Year Old single malts were awarded the prestigious Double Gold. It was a fitting redemption, decades in the making.
