Bruichladdich

Bruichladdich was built in 1881 by the Harvey brothers on the shore of Loch Indaal, on the Rinns of Islay, the westernmost part of the island. The Harvey’s were a dynastic whisky family that had owned two Glasgow distilleries since 1770.

The distillery was one of the one of the most modern plants during its inception and is today considered as one of Scotland’s most innovative distillery plant. Much of the equipment in use today is the original Victorian equipment including the original “open” 7-tonne “mashtun”.

In 2010 the last authentic Lomond still which was recovered during the demolition of Inverleven distillery in Dumbarton was installed at Bruichladdich and, following modifications by Master Distiller Jim McEwan, this commenced distillation of ‘The Botanist’ Islay dry gin in 2011.
