Glencadam has been a quiet player for most of its existence and was owned by David Scott and his descendants from 1827- 1891, and during this period it was rented to various distillers. Over next few decades the distillery had a succession of owners.
The distillery was mothballed during both world wars. The warehouses were instead used to barrack soldiers. There is still a mark on the grass by No. 2 warehouse where their commissary was.
The liquid produced has always been used for blended whiskies but it is slowly emerging as a single malt in its own right after it was bought in 2003 by Angus Dundee Distillers, which also owns the Tomintoul distillery in Ballindalloch. Soon after the acquisition, Angus Dundee released the first ever single malt product, Glencadam Single Malt Scotch Whisky Aged 15 Years in 2005.
