Glengyle is one of just three distilleries left in Campbeltown, the smallest whisky region. Springbank and Glenscotia are the other distilleries operating in this region.
Birthed out of a family feud between Springbank Distillery heirs, John and William Mitchell – Mitchell’s Glengyle Distillery was founded by the latter. William ran it as the sole owner till the turn of the century, when the distillery would suffer at the hands of a sudden economic downturn, just as most of its contemporaries. 75 years since it had last produced a spirit, Glengyle was bought by a new company – Mitchell’s Glengyle Limited, headed by a Mr. Hedley G. Wright.
Since then, Glengyle has been transformed into a shining modern distillery – offering a variety of wonderful whiskies – but not under the name of Glengyle, since there exists a blended-Highland malt of the same name. Instead, they chose Kilkerran, derived from the original Gaelic name of Campbeltown. More than a century since its inception, Glengyle stands stronger than ever, making single malt enthusiasts bless the centuries-old family feud.
