Macallan

Macallan is an excellent example of the significance of size on whisky character.
It is considered to be the second or third highest-selling single-malt scotch, next to Glenfiddich and Glenlivet. Originally, The Macallan was matured only in oak sherry casks brought to the distillery from Jerez de la Frontera, Spain.

In 2001, Michael Martin selected The Macallan 10 Years Old as the official Scotch of the Speaker of the House of Commons. The recent years has seen a greater emphasis been placed on the nascent luxury whisky market with bottlings of 50- and 60-year-old Macallan in Lalique decanters, the creation of the Fine & Rare vintage range dating back to 1926, and the Masters of Photography series.

In 2015, a 6 litre crystal decanter of Macallan Imperiale ‘M’ whisky scooped the prestigious title of world’s most expensive whisky when it sold at auction in Hong Kong for $628,205. This record was smashed in 2018 when a bottle of Macallan Valerio Adami 1926 60-year-old fetched a whopping $1.1 million approximately at auction in Edinburgh. This record was smashed again in 2019 when Macallan Fine and Rare 60-year old 1926 was sold for $1.9 million at the Sotheby’s auction.

In 2021, a Macallan 1991 Sherry Butt Cask set a new record for the most expensive whisky cask ever sold with a price tag of $2.33 million, this cask also included a specially-commissioned NFT. In 2019, a Macallan Sherry Hogshead was sold for $572,000. In 2022, Macallan 1988 cask fetched $1.1 million at an online auction site, after being bought for just $6,000 in 1988.
