Located near Balmoral Castle in Royal Deeside area, the first Lochnagar distillery was burnt down in suspicious circumstances in 1824 and a replacement again burnt down in 1841. In 1845 John Begg built the “new” Lochnagar distillery.
In 1848, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visit the distillery and grant it a Royal Warrant.
The distillery produces small amount of whisky, most of which is used in Johnnie Walker black and blue label and in more recent times became the named malt in Korea’s top seller blended whisky – Windsor.
Royal Lochnagar’s no-age statement, 100% Sherry cask brand- Selected Reserve, was once the most expensive whisky in the Diageo portfolio.
